‘Tis the Season…and its’ already a local tradition.
The holiday season will ring in as the
Lake Mohawk boardwalk in Sparta
is once again transformed into a
bustling German Christmas Market
(Weihnachtsmarkt).
This annual event was conceived only six years ago and is already firmly established as a local tradition in Sussex County, The idea was brought to life by a group of volunteers who wanted nothing more than to raise funds for local charities, while creating a unique event that is open to the public along the idyllic boardwalk of the Lake Mohawk Country Club.
This year the German Christmas Market will proudly showcase some 40 vendors, that in turn offer unique and traditional gift items for sale; from European chocolates to hand-crafted pottery, fine artisans offering works across a variety of mediums: from woods through fabrics, and timeless German traditional hand crafted wooden nutcrackers, pyramids, schwiboggen and smoker men to decorate your home for the holidays.
While you personalize your holiday shopping, tantalizing smells will dance among the vendors set along the picturesque lakefront, as traditional items from sizzling German sausages, sumptuous soups, goulash and sauerbraten to hand warming hot chocolate, apple struedel, linzer tarts, and gingerbread men and warmed mulled spice wine (gluhwein) are prepared among the festive chorus’s of local school choirs and entertainers.

musical performances by both Sparta
High School and Middle School German
choirs, German School of Morristown
choir, Storytelling hour by Joanne
Kanouse, Accordion accompaniment and
Yodeling by Barry Adler, Harmony in
Motion (Women’s Acappella), and dancers
from the Lenape Valley German Folk
Club. Santa Claus will be visiting the
boardwalk on Saturday afternoon!

Last year $10,000.00 was distributed to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Sussex County, the German Language Departments of the Sparta School Districts (scholarship),and Domestic Abuse Services Inc (DASI) of Newton.
